Why should your web site be accessible?
There are lots of reasons to make your web site accessible. Listed below are just a few.
It’s the law…
- Federal. The 1998 Amendment to Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act requires that U.S. federal agencies make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. Disabled employees and members of the public are to have access to and use of information that is comparable to the access available to those who are not disabled. This includes web pages.
- State. Title 1, Section 206 of the Texas Administrative Code addresses the accessibility and usability requirements for web sites of state agencies and institutions of higher education. State web sites are required to meet the definition of a generally accessible site.
It’s good business …
- Larger Customer Base. The more people can access and use your web site, the larger your audience and potential market share. This can translate into improved sales and profitability.
- Cost Effective. It is more efficient and cost effective to maintain an accessible site. Accessible web design separates content from presentation. This makes it easier and less expensive to change the look of your site.
- Good Public Relations. Although less tangible, there is something to be said for creating goodwill and demonstrating social responsibility by making your web site accessible. While you may not legally be obligated to make your site accessible now, the law is quickly changing, and you want to be ready when it does.
It’s the right thing to do…
- Inclusion. An accessible web site can be accessed and used by everyone so no one gets left out. It’s a way of saying, “Welcome! Come on in. We’re glad you’re here. We want your business.”
- Usability. Improved usability is an additional benefit of accessible web design. Many of the techniques that make a site more accessible also make it more usable. In addition to people using assistive technology devices, those using limited browsers such as cell phones or PDAs can access your information.
